Overhaul

[edit]

So as you can I see, I drastically changed this template, and made it into 3 sections. Banks, Credit Unions, and Other Financial Institutions (ATB Financial) so this encompasses the reality of the Canadian retail "bank" experience. Me-123567-Me (talk) 21:43, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I separated the bank section into the "Big 5" and "Other Banks". Me-123567-Me (talk) 18:30, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

For profit banks

[edit]

I changed this back to banks because credit unions are also for-profit. Me-123567-Me (talk) 21:09, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You're making a change that has been stable for several months, so the onus for developing consensus for that change is on you, so I will be reverting your change.
As per Credit union and sources, credit unions are not-for-profit organizations, so the distinction that existed that you are attempting to erase is valid: "For-profit banks" and "Credit unions" are not the same thing in the context of some credit unions now being classed as banks.
Hope that helps! —Joeyconnick (talk) 18:03, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Credit unions in Canada are not non-profit. "Contrary to popular belief coops are not non-profits, and do aim earn profits. " https://www.uaa.alaska.edu/academics/business-enterprise-institute/coop-development/what-are-cooperatives.cshtml Me-123567-Me (talk) 20:00, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Time isn't a factor in which an edit can be challenged. Me-123567-Me (talk) 20:01, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Contrary to your abject misrepresentation on my Talk page ("I have consensus. You're the one being challenged" in this edit), you're the one making the edit and you have no consensus.
The edit that made the distinction (not mine, by the way, but done by Graham11) was made in April. So it's been stable for about half a year until you came along and decided to deliberately misunderstand things. By saying "For-profit banks", no one is saying credit unions are NON-profit... the point being made is that they are NOT-FOR-profit, which is very distinct from how traditional banks operate. It's a reasonable distinction to make, so maybe you should stop with the edit-warring and revert yourself? —Joeyconnick (talk) 20:08, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"Any profits earned by a credit union are re-invested in the credit union or directed to support members and the community. "[1] I also find the word for-profit in this context to be inflammatory. Per WP:Behave - "Wikipedia is not a place to hold grudges or import personal conflicts, nor is it the place to carry on ideological battles or nurture prejudice, hatred, or fear. Making personal battles out of Wikipedia discussions goes directly against our policies and goals. In addition to avoiding battles in discussions, do not try to advance your position in disagreements by making unilateral changes to policies. Do not disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point. " Me-123567-Me (talk) 20:15, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Inflammatory in what way? Everyone knows banks, like most businesses, seek profits and are for-profit ventures. Not as many potentially know that credit unions take a somewhat different tact. I fail to see how labelling banks as "for-profit" is inflammatory. The whole point is that, if (some) credit unions are now banks, it's worthwhile to point out they don't operate in the same way as traditional banks.
And I'm not sure how that warrants you implying my behaviour is unreasonable. You came in, made a change, and were reverted. You have since then continued to edit war and insist your opinion (despite not being backed by facts) is the one true opinion, including claiming consensus for said change when clearly none exists. —Joeyconnick (talk) 03:48, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But I will put this out to the wider community to see what consensus is. You may be right. Me-123567-Me (talk) 20:15, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Response to third opinion request:
I went back and forth on this, but having "Banks" and "Credit Union" as the headers is just better from a readiablity standpoint, especially for a template. If the reader has a question about the difference they can follow the links to read the articles to learn more. Hope this helps. Section header

[edit]

Should the section header for banks be per-qualified with the term "for profit"? 20:18, 14 October 2024 (UTC)

No, just link to an appropriate article for people who want to find out what is meant by "bank" in this context. I have linked the word to Banking in Canada. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:03, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
